Smoking affects blood flow

Smoking can cause blood vessels to narrow and block. This stops important blood getting to different parts of the body and causes death or damage to the organ or part of the body.
For example, if the blood flow to the foot is blocked, this can cause the foot to die and the person may require the foot to be removed with surgery called an amputation.

Brain abscess from taking drugs

This is a CT scan of a person’s brain. It shows a dark round mass with a white outline inside the brain – this is a brain abscess which can happen from injecting recreational drugs such as heroin.

Alcoholic liver disease

Too much alcohol can irreversibly damage the liver, causing it not to work properly.  A damaged liver is at a higher risk of developing cancer in it.  This is a CT scan image of a person’s abdomen. 
It shows the liver as a triangular shaped organ in the top left corner. This liver is irregular and shrunk from alcohol damage.  Swipe across to reveal the cancer in this liver – the white round shaped mass.

Hip replacement surgery

Osteoarthritis is a very common painful condition that affects the hip joint, where the joint gets worn out due to a number of contributing factors. One way this can be treated is by surgically replacing the hip joint with a prosthetic joint.

Breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. It can be detected with a special type of x-ray imaging of the breast called a mammogram. 
In Wales, mammograms are usually offered to women to screen for breast cancer every three years between the age of 50 to 70.

X-ray of hands

It may surprise you to know that the hand is one of the most complicated   structures of the body. There are 27 bones, 29 joints and at least 123 named ligaments in the human hand! But, did you know the bones in your hand are constantly changing as you age?
Many of the bones of the hand start out soft and malleable. As we age, they begin to harden. As we get older our joints can start to wear out causing our hands to get stiffer and less mobile.
